Top Ten Tuesday: Guys I Would Crush On If I Were A Heroine

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is about characters we'd crush on if we were fictional characters. Even though I've always wanted to be very clever and sensible in my love relationships, I must confess that for a very long time I used to closely resemble Marianne Dashwood in this regard.

I was not only hyper-romantic but also mega naive; hence, I trusted in many a man who were charming and loved by everybody but who turned out to be such a disappointment to me. Hence, I'm sure that even if I were a fictional character, I would have a crush on some bad boys. At the same time, I hope that, after one or more of those bad boys would have broken my heart, I would have the good fortune to meet at least one of the good guys, one who would really be worthy of my attention and feelings. :-D For all these reasons, it should come as no surprise that my Top Ten List today doesn't consist of positive characters only...

The Bad Boys

What do handsome and clever but bad boys, such as Daniel Cleaver from Bridget Jones's Diary, Frank Churchill from Emma, or John Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility, have in common? They all are masters of words. That is to say, they know what they should tell a woman to make her weak and melt her heart. They might even seem to have gentlemanly manners and a big heart, but the problem is they are neither honest nor do they really care about anybody except themselves. They are either commitment-phobic or even worse, they have committed themselves to a woman in secret, but they keep pretending to be available and interested in you. (Believe me I know what I'm speaking about, as I was unfortunate enough to meet my "Frank Churchill", the most popular guy in town, who forgot to mention that he was engaged...) Anyway, if I were you, I would rather run away from such boys, because they are selfish liars, womanisers, cheaters, and simply too good to be true.

The Good Guys

Now these guys, they truly melted my heart, and I'm sure that there are some fortunate women out there who had been lucky enough to meet the real-life counterparts of these good guys. Male characters, such as Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility, Mr Knightley from Emma, Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind, Ethan Ainsley from Something Borrowed, Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables, or Simon Stein from In Her Shoes, embody everything a woman has ever dreamed of. They are real gentlemen and they behave compassionately not only with their darlings but also with other human beings in their environments. They have a good judgment, high moral character, and maturity. But they are not at all boring, as they are passionate, have a good sense of humour, and just the right amount of romanticism. Although they might criticise even the loves of their lives, they love those women "just as they are". You may tell them all your secrets and worries, as they are discrete and attentive. They also know your taste and secret wishes and keep surprising you with suitable gifts. In a word, they are the best friends of a girl, which is why they would make a perfect husband... *sigh*
